1954 was an extremely big year in Hawaii, Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio started off the year with a bang, and while they were in Hawaii, the drive for Hawaii Statehood was going full blast. But also happening was a major new John Ford movie, "Mr. Roberts" being filmed on Kaneohe bay. At left, Ford greets starlets just arrived on a United flight who will play roles as military nurses, while, at right, a film crew with stars Henry Fonda, James Cagney, Jack Lemmon, William Powell and Ward Bond head off on a Pan Am flight to Midway Island for some location shots that will be included in the "Mr. Roberts" film.
