Younger American's may not know that Joe DiMaggio was one of the greatest baseball players who ever lived, but may have heard the Simon and Garfunkle tune "Mrs. Robinson", written for the movie "The Graduate"-- "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio…" is still today a very haunting tune, perhaps because it evokes a past and a great era that we will not ever see again. DiMaggio came from a proud, hardworking Sicilian-American family in San Francisco, where they operated a small commercial fishing boat. One of the typical American activities he and his brothers enjoyed was playing baseball and Joe found that he was pretty good at it. But never did he dream he would one day be playing for the New York Yankees, or that he would become one of the greatest of all time. Marilyn's pet name for him was "Giuseppe" (Joseph).
