"You Buy 'Em, We'll Fly 'Em!" said the poster. And huge numbers of those planes, such as these P-47 Thunderbolts, streamed through Hickam and Hawaii during the war. Large fleets of fighters and bombers were parked on all available small landing strips around the island as Hickam itself was already way too crowded. Below, a B-17 parked at Hickam having completed 200 combat missions in the Pacific. The airfield was one of the very first Japanese target's struck in the opening days of World War II.
